Example: distinguish ready from exhausted
See how orientation communicates whether an abstract card has been used.
Rules 2026-07-16Reviewed 2026-08-11
Objective
Read a ready-to-exhausted state change from orientation and text.
The card is ready
The card begins upright and its text state also says Ready.
- Orientation: upright
- State: ready
Apply the authored exhaust instruction
The example turns the card sideways and changes its text state.
- Orientation: turning sideways
- State: changing
The card is exhausted
The card remains sideways and the text state reads Exhausted.
- Orientation: sideways
- State: exhausted
Use more than color or position
Orientation and an explicit text label communicate the same public state for visual and nonvisual review.
- Public state: exhausted
- Next change: only when an instruction readies it
